Updated: Aug 11

Asian Tiger Mosquito

Summer means relaxation, vacations, and outdoor evenings! But... and there is a but, it also brings its share of inconveniences, among which are mosquito bites. These insects, far more than a mere nuisance, can transmit serious diseases. Here’s how to protect yourself effectively against these little invaders.

Understanding the Enemy

Mosquitoes, especially females, need blood to develop their eggs. They locate us through their sense of smell, capable of detecting our presence from over thirty meters away. Among the various recognized species, the Asian tiger mosquito is particularly feared. Originating from Asia, it has invaded many territories, including 51 departments in France since its appearance in 2004.

Tips to Protect Yourself from Mosquito Bites

1. Modify Your Body Odor with Vitamin B1

Vitamin B1 can alter your body odor, acting as a natural repellent. It is found in broccoli, spinach, green beans, cabbage, onions, summer squash, or as a dietary supplement.

2. Use Repellent Sprays

Essential oil-based sprays, such as those containing citronella, lavandin, and peppermint, are effective at repelling mosquitoes. Some also offer soothing action in case of a bite.

3. Adopt a Repellent Bracelet

Bracelets infused with essential oils that have insect-repelling properties can also be effective. They gradually release their active ingredients, creating a protective barrier.

4. Light Anti-Mosquito Candles

Candles made with essential oils, such as citronella and geraniol, are ideal for keeping mosquitoes away while spreading a pleasant fragrance.

5. Use Solutions to Soothe Itching

For mosquito bites, skin roll-ons, soothing organic gels, or pens that use heat to relieve itching can be very helpful. As mentioned earlier, some repellent sprays also offer soothing action in case of a bite.

Prevent Mosquito Proliferation

1. Eliminate Stagnant Water

Mosquitoes lay their eggs in stagnant water. It’s crucial to remove all containers that can hold water around your home. Regularly empty saucers, pots, vases, and other receptacles. Cover rainwater collectors and store any items that can hold water in the garden.

2. Maintain Pools and Ponds

If pools are not frequently used, they should be covered or regularly chlorinated. Garden ponds can be protected by introducing goldfish, which feed on mosquito larvae.

Actively Protect Yourself

1. Use Fans

Mosquitoes dislike moving air. Placing a fan in front of a window or around the table during a terrace dinner can help keep them away.

2. Install Mosquito Nets

Mosquito nets on windows and around beds provide effective protection, allowing you to sleep with windows open without the risk of bites.

3. Wear Light and Covering Clothing

Light, loose, and covering clothing is preferable, especially during the times when mosquitoes are most active, such as early morning and late evening.

4. Take Regular Showers

Mosquitoes are attracted to the scent of sweat. Taking a shower after physical activity can reduce the risk of bites.

Avoiding Ineffective Solutions

1. Ultrasonic Devices and UV Lamps

These devices are often ineffective against mosquitoes. Ultrasonic devices and UV lamps generally do not provide the promised protection.

2. Repellent Plants and Essential Oils

Although some plants and essential oils are reputed to repel mosquitoes, their effectiveness is often limited to specific types of plants. For more information, feel free to check our article on which plants are truly effective.

3. Mosquito Traps and Electric Rackets

Mosquito traps are not always reliable. Electric rackets are effective but require you to catch mosquitoes mid-flight, which can be challenging to achieve.

What to Do in Case of a Bite?

disinfect

If you do get bitten despite all precautions, disinfect the bite immediately and avoid scratching it. Use soothing creams or those containing hydrocortisone to relieve itching. If you have traveled to a high-risk area and experience symptoms such as fever or pain, seek medical advice promptly.

By following these tips, you can fully enjoy your summer without the nuisance of mosquitoes.

Have a great vacation and stay bite-free! ;)
