Anti-Mosquito Apps: Ineffective Gadgets or Real Solutions?

Updated: Aug 11

With the arrival of summer, mosquitoes make their grand return, bringing their share of inconveniences. Bites, itching, and sometimes even diseases, these tiny insects can quickly become a nightmare. To address this, many solutions exist, ranging from mosquito nets to insecticides, as well as anti-mosquito apps for smartphones. But are these apps really effective?

The Principle of Anti-Mosquito Apps

Anti-Mosquito Apps

Mosquito repellent apps, available on the App Store and Google Play Store, claim to repel mosquitoes by emitting low-frequency sounds. These sounds are said to mimic the wingbeats of male mosquitoes or dragonflies, creating an unpleasant environment for female mosquitoes, which are the only ones that bite.

The concept is based on the idea that female mosquitoes, searching for blood after mating, would avoid areas where they perceive the presence of male mosquitoes to avoid being disturbed in their quest for food. Additionally, the sound of dragonflies, natural predators of mosquitoes, is also supposed to deter them from approaching.

Scientific opinions on the effectiveness of mosquito repellent apps are mixed.

Yannick Simonin, a virologist and author of an article for INSERM (French National Institute of Health and Medical Research)

However, the effectiveness of these apps is widely contested. According to Yannick Simonin, a virologist and author of an article for INSERM (French National Institute of Health and Medical Research), these apps "have no scientifically proven effectiveness." Studies conducted by the Cochrane Association, which supports medical research, confirm this viewpoint. Research conducted since the 2000s has consistently concluded that these devices are ineffective. INSERM even recommends discontinuing research in this area, a rather rare stance in the scientific community.

One reason for this ineffectiveness is that smartphones simply are not equipped to emit the necessary sound waves. The frequencies emitted by these apps do not correspond to the frequencies that mosquitoes are supposed to find unpleasant. Thus, even if the concept might theoretically work, current smartphone technology cannot practically implement it.

The Danger of a False Sense of Security

In addition to their ineffectiveness, these apps pose another "danger": the false sense of security. Users, believing they are protected by their smartphone, might lower their guard and neglect more effective protection methods. As INSERM points out, this false sense of protection can divert users from truly effective solutions such as mosquito nets or topical repellents.

Alternatives for Protecting Against Mosquitoes

In the face of mosquito threats, it's crucial to adopt proven methods. Here are some tips for effective protection:

  1. Install mosquito nets: The first line of defense against mosquitoes is the mosquito net, whether installed on windows or directly over the bed.

  2. Eliminate standing water: Mosquitoes lay their eggs in stagnant water. By removing these areas, you reduce breeding sites and thus mosquito proliferation.

  3. Use topical repellents: Repellents applied to the skin are very effective in keeping mosquitoes away. It is important to choose products suitable, especially for children and pregnant women.

  4. Avoid insecticides: Although readily available and sometimes effective, insecticides are often harmful to the environment and human health.

The Threat of Mosquito-Borne Diseases

malaria, dengue, chikungunya

Finally, it is crucial to remember that mosquitoes are not just a nuisance; they can also carry serious diseases such as malaria, dengue, and chikungunya. Although these diseases are much more common in tropical regions than in our own, the tiger mosquito, a vector for these viruses, is increasingly present in Europe. It is therefore important to remain vigilant and protect oneself effectively, especially when traveling to risk areas.

As you have understood, mosquito-repellent apps for smartphones, although popular, are not a reliable solution for protecting against mosquitoes. It is better to rely on proven methods and always stay alert to the risks associated with these insects. Adopting effective preventive measures is the best way to enjoy a worry-free summer, free from mosquito bites and diseases.
